The Pipeline

The Anabranch Pipeline system operates 3 pump stations to maintain consistent supply of water.

River pumps stations are located on the Murray River at Fort Courage, on the Darling River at Polia and are essentially identical systems with three submersible river pumps lifting water to a tank and network pumps which convert filitered water to network pressure. In addition to the river pumps, there is a solar booster pump station halfway along the system at Wyndham which boosts pressure to the top end of the system during the day.

Water is most commonly pumped from Fort Courage, with the Darling River pumps (at Polia) being less frequently utilised due to the lower water levels in the Darling. Prior to the installation of the booster station there were often difficulties maintaining pressure at the highest end of the system, a problem overcome by the installation of the booster pump. Water is boosted to the top of the system during the day during the highest demand, and the river pumps can maintain network pressure overnight when there is typically less demand.

Outlets along the system distribute water to the landholders who have tanks, restrictors, meters, and pressure reduction systems at each property. Calculations for infrastructure were based on total acreage and carrying capacity, with each system designed to be able to be filled from empty within two days. In some instances, water is delivered directly via a pressure reduction valve, but the majority pump into the tanks and then distribute to the paddock from there. Some troughs and paddock tanks were allocated through the establishment phase in order to build resilience across the system.

There are 83 outlets across the system, including 9 irrigation outlets.

Features of the pipeline

Pipeline

  • 216.6 km main pipeline
  • 100.8 km spur pipelines
  • Pipeline is made of plastic mPVC class 15 and buried to a depth of 500 – 1000 mm
  • Pipeline size ranges from 50 mm to 300 mm diameter
  • Water will be provided from two pump stations (Murray River and Darling River)
  • 72 stock and domestic off takes (meters housed in a lockable aluminium box on a concrete base) for 42 Anabranch properties
  • 9 irrigation off takes
  • The system is automated to operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year
  • The system is designed to provide 100% demand for 6 months of the year (summer, 1 November to 30 April), and 50% demand for the other 6 months (winter, 1 May to 31 October). Irrigation water will only be supplied during the low demand months
  • Scour valves fitted at low points and air valves at local high points, approximately every 2km along the length of the pipeline
  • Isolation (stop) valves located approximately every 10km. Pipeline isolation valves are also located at each spur/off take and at every junction
  • Pigging entry and exit points are located at every change of pipe diameter to clean the line

Telemetry

  • Telemetry System: monitoring occurring every 15 minutes and downloaded to the Central Monitoring Office every 6 hours. Alarms are generated and alerts issued to operational personnel.

Pump Stations

  • Two identical pump stations, one located on the Murray River 15 km downstream of Wentworth, one located on the Darling River 35 km upstream of Pooncarie
  • Pump Stations consist of river pumps, rising main, network pumps, treatment works, balance tank and building / office
  • River pump stations will comprise of 3 draft tubes (2 on duty and 1 on-standby), supported on piers, with intake screens and a small colourbond shed housing an electrical switchboard
  • River pumps are designed to deliver a flow rate of 50 litres/second
  • Network pump stations will comprise of 6 network pumps (3 main pumps on duty, one main pump on standby, one low flow jacking pump, one standby low flow jacking pump)
  • Network pumps are designed to deliver 45 litres/second at a constant pipeline pressure
  • Water for the system is filtered through gravel media filters
  • Backwash from the gravel media filters is to be disposed off to earth storage dams and bunded areas
  • All shed structures are located above the 1 in 100 year flood level
  • Pumps, filter units and electrical switchboards will be fitted and housed in a colour bond shed
  • Network sheds are 30 m x 10 m, and include a small office and amenities
  • A balance tank will be located near the main building
  • Booster pumps at Wyndham will be constructed for use during an emergency scenario
  • Provisions will be made for an additional Booster pump at Coleraine to be used if required
